However, even the best winter coat needs to fit correctly in order to keep you comfortable. Jackets that are too small —or too big — can leave you unprotected when the chill rolls in. So how do you know you have the right size? Use this quick guide to how a winter jacket should fit to get that “just right” feeling every time you bundle up to face the cold. INSULATED JACKETS For the coldest weather, a jacket that’s insulated with down or synthetic filling delivers extra warmth right where you need it. The filling traps air between the quilted layers of the jacket, which heats up to keep you warm without extra weight. When you buy a puffy jacket online, you’ll need to give it a little time to regain its “loft” — which means puffiness. It’s that puffiness, or fill power, that traps and warms air to insulate you from the cold. A new puffer that’s been tightly packed needs a few days to air out and fluff up for proper fit and more warmth. Give your new jacket a few gentle shakes when you take it out of the box and hang it up somewhere where it has space to breathe. How should an insulated jacket fit? Just like any other outerwear, you can maximize your comfort by choosing the right size for your insulated jacket. While quilted coats are lightweight, they’re naturally a little thicker than a windbreaker or a rain jacket. If your puffy coat is too small, the filling won’t have enough space for air to circulate. Get a coat that’s too large and instead of small air pockets that warm up quickly, you’ll be stuck with big, drafty spaces where the chill can easily seep in. Find Your Fit: How to Pick the Right Size for Your New Winter Coat It’s easy to find your size when you know a few simple tricks to check how your winter jacket fits. With these tips, you can find your correct size in just a few minutes. LAYER UP When December chills give way to January freezes, you’ll likely be wearing your jacket over another warm layer. Make sure to try on your new jacket over your favorite sweatshirt, hoodie or sweater, to make sure it still fits comfortably and gives you room to move. This will ensure that warm air can still circulate through your jacket and your sweatshirt when you need to be extra toasty. JACKET LENGTH Longer coats and parkas provide extra protection for your legs and hips, while shorter-length coats give you more room to move. To check the length of your winter jacket, put it on and zip it up the front. Raise your arms above your head and stretch your torso to see how long it is. A jacket that rides up past your waistband is probably too short — and can leave your midsection exposed to the cold. If raising up your hands causes the front of the jacket to billow out, it’s probably too big. Pay attention to the fit around your shoulders when your arms are raised. If the shoulders are too narrow it can cause the jacket to ride up even more. SLEEVES Your next move is to check the length of the sleeves. Dressed in your winter gear with your jacket zipped up, bring your arms straight out in front of you. For a perfect fit, the cuffs should hit right at the base of your hands. If your wrists are exposed, the sleeves are too short, but if your hands are swallowed up inside the cuffs, they’re too long. TOO SMALL? TOO BIG? How do you know if your coat doesn’t fit correctly? Stand in front of a mirror and look for signs that the fit isn’t right. If the sleeves don’t cover your wrists and the bottom of the coat rides up — like the image on the left — the coat is too small. If the sleeves go down past your thumb, and the shoulders are much wider than your shoulders, the coat is too big. JUST RIGHT When you know what to look for, you can confidently choose your ideal size. The sleeves should be long enough to cover your wrists, and the shoulders should be wide enough that you can hug yourself comfortably, even with an extra layer underneath. The back of the jacket should gently follow the curve of your back. If the body of the coat looks shapeless and oversized, your coat might be too big. If it feels snug but not tight, and sits level around your body, you are wearing the correct band size. If the band digs into your back, then it’s too tight and can leave marks. If the band rides up your back, then it’s too loose and isn’t providing enough support. Next, check your straps. Your straps should sit comfortably on your shoulder without slipping or digging in. When it comes to support, your band does the hard work, while your straps should hold the bra cups in place, close to your body. If your straps are too tight, they’ll dig into your skin and could leave marks. With a bit of resistance, you should be able to fit two fingers between your strap and your shoulder for a good fit. Then check how your cups fit. If the cups fit perfectly around your breasts and there’s no overflow or gaping, your cup size is correct. Overflow at the top or sides suggests the cup size is too small. If your breasts have extra room inside the cups, your cup size is too large. PROOF Don’t get caught in a severe thunderstorm wearing a water-repellent jacket, which is most effective at wicking away a steady stream of droplets (think light to medium precipitation), thanks to a technology treatment called Durable Water Repellent (DWR). It’s a hydrophobic surface coating that makes rainwater bead up and roll right off the fabric. But—it can only repel so much. If you need additional coverage, look for waterproof alternatives. They’re also treated with DWR, according to rain jackets expert Vash Zhu, Global Senior Apparel Designer for Outdoor at adidas. But here’s the difference: “Every part of the jacket (including zippers, snap buttons, pockets, stitching and seams) is taped and sealed to keep your clothing underneath completely dry even in the heaviest downpour.” Important to remember: There’s rarely rain without accompanying gusts of wind. Terms like wind-resistant and wind-proof are exactly as their respective names sound. MATERIAL MATTERS Look closely at the textile label on the jacket’s interior. Nylon or polyester with a DWR coating are the most common fabric blends, but for even more protection from the elements, check for patented technologies like GORE-TEX and adidas’ own RAIN.RDY, best described as a waterproof, breathable membrane that actively funnels water away from the garment to keep you feeling dry. FIND WHAT FITS Keep in mind that all rain jackets don’t—and shouldn’t—fit the same. “It’s not only about function or fashion,” says rain jackets specialist Alejandra Padin, Global Apparel Designer for Outdoor at adidas. “Consider your lifestyle to help you choose the right shape and silhouette.” Case in point: If you reside in a typically cold-weather climate, a longer A-line raincoat that covers your bottom can help keep you even warmer in inclement weather while accommodating chunky clothing underneath. Or, if you regularly partake in intense outdoor activities, a rain jacket that stops at the hips is less restrictive to give you more flexibility to move around. The type of jacket matters as well. “Water-repellent garments can feel more comfortable to wear, because the DWR coating is on the outer surface of the fabric,” explains Vash. “On the other hand, waterproof rain jackets can be sturdier, because they’re constructed with a lamination lining that acts as insurance for shielding your clothing from rainwater.” LAYERED UP “There are three types of layering construction,” adds Vash. “They all deliver different types of benefits.” Think of them as levels: 2-layer, 2.5-layer, and as expected, 3-layer is the most durable. Generally speaking, rain-ready outerwear is comprised of a combination of the following: a DWR-treated outer layer, a polyurethane lining that doubles as a shield for the middle layer, and a mesh, sweat-wicking catchall insert for the innermost layer. TIME TO VENT Here’s the biggest trick—you’ll want a jacket that keeps the rain out, while ensuring a little bit of air flow still gets in, so your skin doesn’t feel sticky and clammy. The technical term for this challenge is breathability. Ventilation is the answer. But Vash says it’s not just air permeable fabrics that are a factor here—it's all down to the details. “You’re most likely to sweat underneath the arms or on your back, so concealed openings like zippered armpit slits and back panels offer even more ventilation to help keep the body feeling dry.” Another pro tip? Also check for adjustable hemlines, cinchable hoods and VELCRO® wrist cuffs. These features can be tightened for added protection and loosened for extra airflow. READY TO WEATHER THE STORM?
