There’s no better feeling than unboxing a new pair of kicks. That fresh smell can fuel a sneakerhead’s dreams. But once they’re out of the box and on the street, anything can happen to your shoes, from scuffs, stains, spilled drinks, to general grit and grime. So how do you keep your sneakers in tip-top condition? Take a look at our step-by-step process to learn a few tricks of the trade. CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS When you’re learning how to clean trainers, follow these steps: STEP 1: GET PREPPED Once you have all your essentials gathered, it’s time to prep your shoe for cleaning. Put on your gloves and place your dirty shoes in your tray or on top of a towel. Begin removing the laces from your shoe. Once you remove the laces, place them in the bowl of bleach water. Spend a minute massaging the bleach into the laces. Place them to the side and let them soak. We will come back to them later. Using your soft bristle brush, begin knocking any loose dirt you see off the upper of your shoe. Use your toothbrush to get into smaller areas of your shoe. Once the upper has been dusted off, pick up your hard bristle brush and begin knocking dirt off the rubber outsole of your shoe. After you knock all the debris off your shoe, stuff your socks or shoe form into your shoe to help it keep its shape while getting cleaned. STEP 2: WASHING THE OUTSOLE The outsole is the part of the shoe that touches the ground when you walk. When learning how to clean shoes remember that you may need different tools to clean specific areas of your shoe. Use your hard bristle brush when cleaning the outsole. Pick up your hard bristle brush and wet it with some warm water. Then add some cleaning solution to the brush. Begin scrubbing the outsole. Let the grooves of this part of the shoe guide you as you clean it. You can pick up your dirt pick and use it to get into the hard-to-reach areas of the outsole. Wipe your shoe down with the microfiber cloth as you go. Once you feel like the outsole is clean, move on to the upper. STEP 3: WASHING THE UPPER The upper is the area of the shoe that covers the entire foot. Use your soft bristle brush to not wear away the material when cleaning this part of the shoe. Wet the soft bristle brush with clean warm water and apply some cleaning solution or dish soap to it. Begin scrubbing the upper area of the shoe. You want to take your time and scrub gently when cleaning the upper to keep the material in good condition. Spend extra time scrubbing away any deep stains or smudges. Use the toothbrush to target specific stains in harder-to-reach areas on your shoe. Use your microfiber towel to wipe away the dirt as you clean. STEP 4: WASHING THE LACES Your laces allow your trainers to fit snugly and securely—when clean—they are the cherry on top of a dazzling shoe. Pick up your laces and wring them out. You’ll see all the dirt is now in the bleach water and not in your laces. Lay a microfiber cloth on your tray or base towel and place your laces on top. Fold the towel over the laces and press down to squeeze any excess water out of the laces. STEP 5: LET THEM AIR DRY The final step in the shoe cleaning process is to let them dry! Place your laces near your shoes and let them air dry at room temperature, away from direct sunlight. This process can take a while, but when your shoes feel dry to the touch inside and out, they’re ready to wear again! </p><h2 xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">You just landed in Tokyo from Shanghai and CLOT’s massive twenty-year celebration museum takeover. You’ve achieved icon status in major avenues. You’re back in adidas sneakers… but If we could take your story back a bit for those less familiar—where have you been, and where are you now?</h2><p xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">I was born in Vancouver (Canada). I grew up in that simple life—super simple. Biking with my sisters to the convenience store, buying five-cent candy. When I was nine, I met my father for the first time… in Hong Kong, and something inside me was like I need to follow my father. So, I moved to Hong Kong, which was a huge culture shock. I stayed in Hong Kong until about ’97. I started learning more about Chinese culture; I learned Cantonese. I was at an international school, so I met a lot of international kids. Hong Kong showed me different cultures and different perspectives and really opened my eyes to globalism.</p><p xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">’97 ’98, I was in New York for a stint, Vancouver for a stint. Fast forward to ’99, and I'm spending the summer in Hong Kong. Randomly at a club—I was nineteen at the time, so it was okay for me to be in the club [laughter]—I got street casted to be in a commercial. I shot the commercial, and then, low and behold, Jackie Chan called me and signed me. So that kind of thrust me into the entertainment industry. I shot my first film and overnight became a celebrity. I didn't really know how to grasp it. It was mind-altering. I kind of got accustomed to the culture, but what I didn't like was I felt like I had no personal rights. I felt like I was a piece of meat.</p><p xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">

</p><p xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">I finished my second movie, and my management company sold me for $2,500,000. I found out at a press conference. They said they could do whatever they wanted with me. And I said, Okay, out of the $2,500,000, what was my cut? I didn’t get anything.</p><p xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">This was a very important moment. That's when I told them, “You don't own me, and you can't tell me what to do. And good luck finding me…” and I came to Japan. I came to Japan, already buzzing in Asia, like this new heartthrob or whatever, and a lot of these people that I considered my idols that are now my friends were like, what are you doing here for so long? Are you filming a movie? I explained my situation, and they said, Hey, you know what? We need someone like you to push youth culture in China. So, I went back to Hong Kong and started Clot and Juice, 100% self-owned and independent. That’s when I broke free. That’s when I felt in control of who and what I was going to be tomorrow.</p><p xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">2008 rolled around, and I had to leave Asia on a whim, literally overnight. I decided to move to Los Angeles; that’s been my home since. I'm very grateful to the city. I've created a whole network of really good friends out there. And a lot of these people, when I first met them, had no idea what I did. So, in theory, this celebrity was shed. I loved it. I loved being just that guy again. Being in LA allowed me to be in a whole different world. I got a new sense of being; I got a new sense of passion. I got a new sense of crew and community, and I felt really empowered to go and do what I wanted to do.

I didn’t set out to be him, but a lot of people are saying that I'm the purveyor of Chinese culture, that it's cool how I put the heritage and culture into my creations, but I did that really unknowingly and then became the ambassador for it.</p><p class="quote-full-width" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">

I came back and saw people expressing themselves, and I was like, wow, I want to be a part of this. Maybe not today because I'm in airport wear, but my tastes have matured, and I haven't really created through that lens.</p><p xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">I spent the whole summer in Europe, going to all these small towns, and the heritage was insane. That European lens has given me a whole different color palette and has inspired me in a different way. So I think that the new EDC vibe is more chic instead of just street. We’re at a point where street is everything, right? Like McDonald's is street. Really? Wow, that's cool. I'm fine with that. Louis Vuitton is street, like who would imagine? "The easiest way to start breaking that shell is by finding your fashion angle because you can say something without saying anything." You just landed in Tokyo from Shanghai and CLOT’s massive twenty-year celebration museum takeover. You’ve achieved icon status in major avenues. You’re back in adidas sneakers… but If we could take your story back a bit for those less familiar—where have you been, and where are you now? I was born in Vancouver (Canada). I grew up in that simple life—super simple. Biking with my sisters to the convenience store, buying five-cent candy. When I was nine, I met my father for the first time… in Hong Kong, and something inside me was like I need to follow my father. So, I moved to Hong Kong, which was a huge culture shock. I stayed in Hong Kong until about ’97. I started learning more about Chinese culture; I learned Cantonese. I was at an international school, so I met a lot of international kids. Hong Kong showed me different cultures and different perspectives and really opened my eyes to globalism. ’97 ’98, I was in New York for a stint, Vancouver for a stint. Fast forward to ’99, and I'm spending the summer in Hong Kong. Randomly at a club—I was nineteen at the time, so it was okay for me to be in the club [laughter]—I got street casted to be in a commercial. I shot the commercial, and then, low and behold, Jackie Chan called me and signed me. So that kind of thrust me into the entertainment industry. I shot my first film and overnight became a celebrity. I didn't really know how to grasp it. It was mind-altering. I kind of got accustomed to the culture, but what I didn't like was I felt like I had no personal rights. I felt like I was a piece of meat. I finished my second movie, and my management company sold me for $2,500,000. I found out at a press conference. They said they could do whatever they wanted with me. And I said, Okay, out of the $2,500,000, what was my cut? I didn’t get anything. This was a very important moment. That's when I told them, “You don't own me, and you can't tell me what to do. And good luck finding me…” and I came to Japan. I came to Japan, already buzzing in Asia, like this new heartthrob or whatever, and a lot of these people that I considered my idols that are now my friends were like, what are you doing here for so long? Are you filming a movie? I explained my situation, and they said, Hey, you know what? We need someone like you to push youth culture in China. So, I went back to Hong Kong and started Clot and Juice, 100% self-owned and independent. That’s when I broke free. That’s when I felt in control of who and what I was going to be tomorrow. 2008 rolled around, and I had to leave Asia on a whim, literally overnight. I decided to move to Los Angeles; that’s been my home since. I'm very grateful to the city. I've created a whole network of really good friends out there. And a lot of these people, when I first met them, had no idea what I did. So, in theory, this celebrity was shed. I loved it. I loved being just that guy again. Being in LA allowed me to be in a whole different world. I got a new sense of being; I got a new sense of passion. I got a new sense of crew and community, and I felt really empowered to go and do what I wanted to do. Let’s talk about your seemingly adopted role as the unofficial global ambassador for Chinese youth culture. Somehow, I became that guy. I didn’t set out to be him, but a lot of people are saying that I'm the purveyor of Chinese culture, that it's cool how I put the heritage and culture into my creations, but I did that really unknowingly and then became the ambassador for it. “A lot of people say I’m doing this for Chinese culture. No, I'm doing this for the culture. I don't make shoes for the Chinese; I make shoes with a Chinese thought process for the world." Operating out of LA as your home base and being away from China for some years, going back now, how have you seen things progress? I didn't come to China for the whole pandemic. I came back and saw people expressing themselves, and I was like, wow, I want to be a part of this. You gotta know how to lace sneakers by finding a style that fits you and your shoes. Take a moment before bringing those fresh kicks to the street so you’re looking good from head-to-toe. Each and every detail matters when you’re trying to dominate the streetstyle game. One way to step up your look is to make those laces pop. Here you’ll find six creative ways to lace up your sneakers. Some offer a functional approach, some more stylish. But all of them offer a chance for you to express your individuality and creator spirit. Letting your shoes speak to your style wherever you’re headed. LACING INSTRUCTIONS When you’re learning how to lace sneakers, follow these steps: Straight Lacing: This style is also called “fashion lacing” or “street lacing” since it’s casual, clean and cool. The loose lacing style gives your foot room to breathe so you can put swagger in your step. Step #1 Start with an equal amount of lace on each side of the bottom eyelet. Step #2 Left lace goes straight up the inside of the shoe to the second eyelet, then straight across. Step #3 Right lace goes straight up the inside of the shoe to the third eyelet, then straight across. Step #4 Repeat Steps 2 and 3, alternating between the right and left laces skipping their respective eyelets inside the shoe before running straight across to the next eyelet. Continue this pattern until complete and finish with a regular knot. Ladder Lacing: This unmistakable design weaves laces together horizontally across the top of the shoe and vertically around each eyelet to create a “ladder.” The look always attracts attention for its unique and distinctive style, one originally created for military boots worn by ceremonial guards. As such, when shoes have lots of eyelets like Stan Smith’s, then it’s highly effective at keeping your shoes tied throughout the entire day. Step #1 Lace straight across through the bottom eyelets. Make sure you have an equal amount of lace remaining on the left and right sides. Step #2 Run each lace into the second eyelet directly above by going straight up the outside of the shoe. Step #3 Now, feed each lace straight across to the opposite side, then wrap it under the lace and the second eyelet (but not through the eyelet), before continuing up to the next eyelet directly above. Step #4 Repeat the same process. Sending the laces straight across, under the adjacent lace and eyelet, before stringing it up to the next open eyelet until you’re finished. Step #5 Take the laces back across and under a final time for a consistent look before tying a bow knot. Spider Web Lacing: This is the show stopper. The Spider Web is a detailed and intricate lacing technique to stand out on the streets and start turning heads. The impressive style weaves an elaborate web with laces going back and forth across the top of the shoe, so follow the steps closely. It’s as complex as it is cool. Step #1 Begin by lacing straight across the second-from-the-bottom eyelets and make sure each end is even. Step #2 Slip each end down the outside of the shoe to the first, bottom eyelet. Step #3 Take each lace diagonally across the shoe, creating an “X” as the laces move into the third eyelets. Step #4 Now, take each lace straight back down, wrapping under the lace and eyelet directly below (not through the eyelet). Then take the laces up, diagonally crossing into the next open eyelet. In this case, it should be the fourth. Step #5 Repeat Step 4 until you’ve reached the top eyelets and tied your preferred knot. Bow Tie Lacing: If you want to rock a lacing style that’s more minimalistic, then Bow Tie lacing is the way to go. It hides the laces by running them up the inside of the shoe vertically before crossing them over on the outside to form a simple “bow-ties.” Creating a loose fit that’s comfortable, casual and stylish. 100%. Note:The method changes depending on the number of eyelets your shoes have and you might want shorter shoelaces because Bow Tie lacing doesn’t require much. Step 1 - Even Number of Eyelets Take the lace straight across and through the bottom eyelets on the outside of the shoe. Step 2 – Even Number of Eyelets Slide the laces up to the second eyelet on the inside of the shoe, then across diagonally into the third eyelets. Making an “X” shape. Step 3 String the laces through the inside of the shoe to the open eyelet directly above, before crossing the laces diagonally on the outside of the shoe into the next available eyelet. Step 4 Continue the pattern until you’ve reached the top of the shoe. Tie knot. Loop-Back Lacing: When you’re rocking Loop-Back Lacing, fancy footwork takes on a whole new meaning. This decorative style loops the laces together straight down the middle of the shoe. It’s the opposite approach of traditional crisscross lacing patterns. To really make the style pop, try thick, round and colorful laces that contrast with the color of the shoe (for example: white laces on black shoes). Step #1 First thing first, take the lace directly across the bottom eyelets – leaving the left and right laces equal in length. Step #2 Now you’re going to take each lace diagonally across the shoe, wrap them around each other in the middle and string them back through the inside of the next open eyelet. Note: Laces should loop in the middle, and the left and right laces should always return to the same side. Step #3 Repeat Step 2 for each eyelet by continuing to loop the left and right laces together in the middle of the shoe and back through the next open eyelet. Step #4 Once the laces have reached the top of the shoe, tie your preferred knot. Missing Laces: Show your true creator spirit with this imaginative and original lacing technique. What makes this one so different? The laces are hidden, taking the shortest path through the eyelets along the inside of the shoe and making it appear as if your shoes are missing laces. The novelty style creates an incredibly loose fit that’s perfect for kicking it with your crew. Just don’t plan on busting a move on the dance floor. Step #1 Begin by threading the lace straight across the bottom eyelets. Leave an equal amount of lace on the left and right sides. Step #2 Take each lace straight up into the eyelet above and continue stringing the laces through the eyelet above, alternating in and out but never crossing over the middle. Step #3 Once you reach the top of the shoe, tie it in a bow and tuck the bow behind the tongue. Note: Shorter shoelaces are recommended or you’ll need to tuck the extra lace material inside the shoe.

Consider yoga shorts with built-in liners for added comfort and coverage during a super bendy practice. Like every essential yoga piece, make sure your shorts are made of quality, absorbent fabric. The absorbent feature allows you to feel dry and comfortable no matter how intense your practice is. Longer form-fitting bike shorts usually allow more comfort and coverage and are less likely to ride up than a loose or short pair.
